PersonalityMai has the radio or the television on in the background all the time, preferring the noise to the silence. She never leaves the house alone and always have a few friend or relatives around. In a group, she is bubbly and charming, drawing crowds as she talks for hours, turning a short story into a novel. Mai has a big heart, always willing to help those in need. Mai wants to be a doctor, like her mother. She abhors violence, viewing it as barbaric, and doesn’t understand why people have to be cruel to each other.

BackgroundMai was born in Ireland to an Irish mother and a Filipino father. She is two years younger than her sister and three years older than the twins. When she was five, they moved to the Philippines, where her parents worked at a local hospital. Her mother is a successful surgeon, while her father prefers being a general practitioner. She always admired both her parents’ work. However, the ability to save a life by cutting someone open fascinates her.Mai grew up in the wealthier part of the city, never venturing far from school, home, or friends. During her sophomore year of high school, she took college courses. Without top grades, she wouldn’t be able to get into the best medical school. She is afraid of disappointing her parents and not follow in her parent’s footsteps. Mai volunteered at her parent’s work when she first started high school. She wanted a better understanding of what the sick and injured go through. Like second nature, she jumped in to help with some patients, which she found rewarding. During her senior year of high school, she followed her parents around the hospital. Watching mom operate from the observation platform thrilled her.One evening when she was at the hospital, there was a bombing in town. The hospital was overrun with casualties. She jumped in and help with the casualties where the staff would allow her. All the chaos and mayhem she saw that night made her wondered how some people could deliberately cause such pain and suffering. After a couple long nights of studying for an exam with a group of students, she found a painted stone at her door. Picking the rock up, five unrecognizable Chinese characters began to glow. Shocked, she let go, and the rock hit the floor with a loud thud. Kicking the stone aside, Mai went to bed for a night’s sleep she would not soon forget.
